Alkaline Hydrolysis
Understanding the Alkaline Hydrolysis Process
Alkaline hydrolysis is a process that is very natural and very advanced in science. The process breaks down the body's organic matter by using warm water, a gentle flow of water, and alkaline chemicals like potassium hydroxide. This carefully controlled environment mimics the natural process of decomposition that happens in the earth, but it happens in hours instead of years.
The body is put in a solution of 95% water and 5% alkali and placed in a special vessel for the process. Through a combination of temperature and alkalinity, the body's soft tissues are gently dissolved, leaving only the mineral bone remains. These pieces of bone are then ground into a fine powder that looks a lot like cremated remains and can be given back to the family.
The Environmental Benefits of Alkaline Hydrolysis
One of the best things about alkaline hydrolysis is that it is very good for the environment. This process is a big step forward in making the funeral industry more environmentally friendly, and it gives families peace of mind that they made a choice that will last.
Dramatically Lower Carbon Emissions
Compared to traditional flame cremation, alkaline hydrolysis releases about 90% less greenhouse gases. Cremation releases a lot of carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the air, but alkaline hydrolysis works at much lower temperatures and releases very little, making it one of the best ways to dispose of a body for the environment.
Energy Efficiency
The process uses a lot less energy than cremation with flames. To do a traditional cremation, you need to keep the temperature between 1,400 and 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 to 3 hours, which uses a lot of fossil fuels. Alkaline hydrolysis works at about 300 degrees Fahrenheit and uses a lot less energy to get the same result.
No Harmful Chemical Release
Alkaline hydrolysis keeps all of its byproducts in a closed system, unlike traditional cremation, which can release harmful chemicals like dioxins, mercury from dental fillings, and other chemicals into the air. This keeps toxins from getting into the air, which protects the air quality for our communities.
Nutrient Preservation and Return
The alkaline hydrolysis process keeps the nutrients in the dead person's body in a sterile liquid byproduct that can be safely put back in the ground. This nutrient-rich solution can be used to feed plants, which means your loved one can literally give back to the earth. Many families find this circle of life very meaningful.
Sustainable Choice for Future Generations
By choosing alkaline hydrolysis, families contribute to a more sustainable future. This process uses renewable resources (water and plant-based alkali), avoids fossil fuel consumption, and leaves minimal environmental impact—a gift to the planet and future generations.
Alkaline Hydrolysis in Pennsylvania: Our Partnership Approach
We know that alkaline hydrolysis is a new and interesting process that hasn't yet been approved by the government in Pennsylvania. But we really believe that our families should have access to this kind, eco-friendly option if they want it.
Our Trusted Partner Facility
To offer this service to our families, we've teamed up with a licensed and well-known alkaline hydrolysis facility in a nearby state where the process is legal and has been around for a long time. We didn't make this choice lightly; we did a lot of research and visited facilities to make sure we chose a partner who shares our values of professionalism, dignity, and ethical behavior.
Maintaining Our Standards of Care
The actual alkaline hydrolysis process takes place at our partner facility outside of Pennsylvania. However, you can be sure that your loved one will be treated with the same care, respect, and dignity that we give to all of our clients at our own funeral home. We handle all of the transportation ourselves and stay in touch with our partner facility the whole time.
Complete Transparency and Communication
We think that being completely open with our families is important. We will keep you updated on your loved one's journey and explain each step of the process to you. You will always know where your loved one is, and we are here to help you with any questions or concerns you may have.
Commitment to Your Peace of Mind
We will always put your happiness and peace of mind first. We know that you need to trust someone to choose any method of disposal, especially one that is new like alkaline hydrolysis. We're dedicated to earning and keeping that trust by giving great service, clear communication, and constant support during this hard time.
