Judson R. Duell, II, 82, of Knotts Island, NC, formerly of Coudersport, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 16, 2023. He was a wise and generous man, a caring father and grandfather, and the most devoted and loving husband.
Judson was born on December 18,1940, in Coudersport, PA, and was the son of Judson and Mary Elizabeth (Sallade) Duell. Judson graduated from Coudersport High School in June 1958 and enlisted in the army one month later, with him beginning his first overseas tour in March 1959. He met the love of his life while in Germany, and they were married September 9, 1960.
Judson spent 26 years serving with the U.S. Army. He served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1968, and he went on to fulfill many roles, including Public Information Specialist, Military Policeman, Administrative Specialist, and Command Sergeant Major. He was also a Personnel Senior Sergeant for 17 years. He also earned many medals, including National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Bars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit, as well as many other ribbons and awards.
While highly dedicated to his military career, he was ambitious and always eager to continue learning. Judson attended night school courses and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business in 1975, and he then went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Human Resources in 1978. Judson taught at the University of Alaska for two years, prior to moving back home and becoming the manager of the Job training office in Coudersport in 1984. He then worked for the Potter County Board of Assistance until he eventually retired.
Judson was an avid golfer, with him and his wife becoming “snowbirds” and spending many winters in Florida where he had frequent access to the golf course. He also loved hunting, camping, and gardening.
Jud is survived by his wife, Helga (Pitz) Duell, and his son, Joseph Duell, of Knotts Island, NC. Jud was preceded in death by his sons, John H. Duell and Judson R. Duell, III. Judson was greatly adored by his grandchildren, Ashley, Breanne, John, and Kyla, as well as his great grandchildren, who all knew and loved him as “Opa.”
The family has entrusted Jud’s local arrangements to the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 N. East St., Coudersport. To share a memory or condolence visit www.thomasfickinger.com.
