Edwin Wetzel Obituary

Edwin Paul Wetzel, 93, of Coudersport, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Sweden Valley Manor, after a brief illness. Mr. Wetzel was born September 3, 1928, in Coal Center, PA, the son of Christy Robert and Melda (Varney) Wetzel. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the age of 17, earned the rank of Corporal and served his country until his discharge in 1948. On November 20, 1948, in Allegany, NY, he married Merlyn Spring, enjoying 53 years together until her passing in 2001. Mr. Wetzel was employed for many years as a truck driver for Herr's Trucking of Quarryville, PA. His deliveries were always Monday through Friday, allowing him to spend every weekend with his family. After retiring from Herr's, Ed still enjoyed being on the road, and spent time as a driver for Adelphia Cable Company. He especially enjoyed trips to the Buffalo Sabers games with John Rigas. He also enjoyed transporting cars for Kightlinger Motors of Coudersport. Ed always was a "car guy", enjoying Pontiacs in particular, but his favorite car was always a "clean car".
Edwin is survived by 4 sons: John Wetzel (Kimber) of Port Matilda, Michael Wetzel (Janice) of Ithaca, NY, Wayne Wetzel of Coudersport, and Scott Wetzel (Kathy) of Houston, TX; a brother: Bob Wetzel of Lake Placid, FL; sister: Emily Jordan of Olean, NY; sister-in-law: Betty Nicoscia of Akron, NY; brother-in-law: Jerry Spring of Allegany, NY; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Merlyn, two sisters: Mary Ellen Olson and Evelyn Jean, two brothers: Everett G. and David L. Wetzel, daughter: Linda, and son-in-law Paul Formanski.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas Fickinger Funeral Home 210 N. East Street Coudersport, PA.
