Betty S. Spong

Betty S. Spong, 91, of Coudersport, died Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at UPMC Cole Extended Care, Coudersport.

Betty was born on April 4, 1930, in Crosby, the daughter of the late Frank and Viva (Stiles) Ruter.  She married Raymond L. Spong on September 27, 1947 and celebrated 58 years of marriage until his passing on April 30, 2006.

Betty was an assistant cook in the Coudersport Elementary School for over 26 years.  She was a former member of the Coudersport Alliance Church and enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her children and grandchildren.   

Betty is survived by a son, Michael R. (Cindy) Spong and a daughter, Cathy (Rolly) Troy both of Coudersport; a granddaughter, Jowana Spong of Bethesda, MD; a grandson, Michael J. (Jen) Spong of Westfield; two sisters-in-law, Madeline Ruter of Painted Post, NY; and Marguerite York of Allegany, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by three brothers, Frankie, Ed and Chet Ruter and two sisters, Eva Robinson and Jane Kniffin.

There will be no visitation and a private committal service will be held in Sweden Hill Cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Thomas E. Fickinger Funeral Home, 210 North East St. Coudersport, PA, with Betty’s arrangements.
